Excellence in Medicine vs. Perfectionism: Embracing Your Purpose in Medicine

Drawing on the research of Brené Brown on vulnerability, shame, and the difference between healthy striving and perfectionism, this session invites physicians to take a closer look at how we define excellence in our profession. As physicians, we are trained to pursue excellence — it is woven into our identity, our education, and our responsibility to patients. But at a certain point, that healthy pursuit can quietly morph into perfectionism — and that shift can be costly.

Perfectionism often disguises itself as dedication. Yet over time, it can become self-destructive, fueling burnout, eroding joy, and distancing us from the very purpose that called us to medicine.

In this engaging and reflective conversation, we will explore what perfectionism truly is — and how it differs from healthy striving — along with the ways perfectionism can undermine performance, well-being, and professional fulfillment. Practical tools will be shared to help separate excellence from unrealistic self-expectations and reconnect with purpose in a sustainable way.

When we learn to pursue excellence in a healthy way, we not only protect our own well-being — we become more present, compassionate, and effective for the patients and communities we serve.

Join us for a meaningful discussion about reclaiming purpose, redefining success, and practicing medicine in a way that allows us to thrive — not just perform.

All attendees will be entered into a raffle, and each participant will receive a thoughtfully curated take-home bag with resources to support continued reflection and growth beyond the session.
