In 1975, a group of California physicians came together to tackle the problem of ever-increasing medical malpractice costs. These astute doctors banded together as the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP), and a unique California consumer cooperative was born.

Our organization is physician owned and governed. Our products and services equip the best doctor’s practicing in the State of California with the best tools to meet the business challenges of running a medical practice.

Because medical professional liability coverage can cost a great deal through traditional medical malpractice insurance companies, our founding members were determined to find a way to provide this important protection for physicians at a more cost-efficient rate. This was achieved through creation of the Mutual Protection Trust.

The Mutual Protection Trust (MPT) is our core product. It is only available to members of CAP. Established in 1977, MPT is now considered a benchmark in the California medical professional liability industry. Our MPT product provides protection to more than 11,500 California physicians. The financial strength of the company is so outstanding that it has earned an A+ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best Company for six consecutive years. No other physician-owned company in the nation can make this claim.
